Is Your Body the Perfect Host for the Big “C?” Yes, Cancer! Part III: The Green Smoothie Revolution of Victoria Boutenko

-By Hertha J. Woodruff, A.M.L.S., M.A.

One of the highly, respected leaders of the vegan movement is a woman of Russian descent named, Victoria Boutenko (  I had the opportunity of meeting Victoria personally last summer on August 19, 2011, in Dearborn, Michigan, when she was in our area of the country giving a lecture.  It was a special treat to me since I had read several of her books.  I felt that I had known her a lifetime.  She signed two books that I had of hers and posed for a photo for me.

Here is the photo of Victoria signing a book for an attendee at her lecture.

I follow her green smoothie routine every morning for breakfast.  I blend a handful of fresh, leafy greens (spinach, kale, mustard greens, Swiss chard, romaine lettuce, mint, or parsley), fruit such as bananas, and often berries (strawberries or blueberries or raspberries or blackberries), and water.  I blend all ingredients in my Vitamix blender (any blender is suitable) and drink it without eating anything else so I can receive raw nutrients that can heal, prevent illness, and simply make me feel rejuvenated.  Sometimes I freeze my bananas so the mixture becomes thick and frothy and for variety I add an apple or a pear from time to time.  I use the produce that I have on hand.

According to her Green for Life book, Victoria Boutenko began her raw food diet experimentation in January of 1994 with her family.  Her husband, Igor, had been ill with several surgeries, had hyperthyroidism and chronic rheumatoid arthritis. Victoria had arrhythmia, an irregular heartbeat, edema and was overweight.  Her daughter, Valya, had asthma and allergies. Her son, Sergei, was diagnosed with diabetes.  They began to try a raw, plant-based diet without cooking any food and within three months, everyone’s health improved.  However, Victoria felt that her family’s diet was not quite complete.  There was a missing link. After months of investigating she finally discovered that her family was lacking sufficient, leafy greens.  So she decided to research the chimpanzee that was similar to the human being for answers.  She found that the chimpanzee shared 99.4 percent of the genes of humans.  She examined the research of Jane Goodall who is famous for her research on chimpanzees. She discovered that chimpanzees consume mainly greens in their diet.  Because of this, chimpanzees are immune to and never develop cancer, AIDS, Hepatitis C, and other serious diseases.

Victoria began to experiment with greens and learned that greens were most beneficial in nutrients once they were ruptured before consumption. So she began to blend them with water in a Vitamix blender.  However, she had a tough time tolerating the bitter taste of the greens mixed with water.  One day she decided to add bananas to her Vitamix along with greens and finally developed a green smoothie that was palatable.  Victoria researched further and was excited to learn that greens have protein. They are very high in amino acids.

Victoria and her husband, Igor, began to drink the green smoothies daily and after two months, her husband’s beard and mustache lost its gray color and returned to its original black color of his youth.  Igor also began to look younger and felt better.  Their children began to have more energy and their moods improved.  Elimination became more regular for all family members because of the abundance of natural fiber from the green smoothies. According to Victoria, the colon must be emptied often to eliminate toxins in the body that cause disease and discomfort.

According to Victoria Boutenko prepare your green smoothie in the mornings, at least a quart.  Drink one and refrigerate the rest for later.  Only make your smoothies with greens, fruit and water.  Don’t add nuts, oils or supplements.  Drink it by itself.  Do not add starchy vegetables.  Don’t add too many different ingredients.  Rotate greens each day (Don’t use the same variety of greens daily.).  Buy organic produce.  Use the ratio of 60 percent fruit to 40 percent greens. Green smoothies are a complete food because they contain fiber.  Green smoothies will store from one to three days in a refrigerator. Or, you may wish to make them fresh each time.  I like mine fresh. You can vary your green smoothies to your liking and not have to follow a specific recipe.

You do not have to eat an entire raw or vegan diet to receive the benefits of green smoothies. It is the addition of the green smoothie to your existing diet that makes the difference. Victoria Boutenko recommends consuming at least one quart of green smoothie a day.  So, to recapture the youth of your past in your appearance and the energy you once had, try incorporating a Victoria Boutenko green smoothie into your daily diet.  Here is to a healthier you!
